GOODBYE MICK ROCK

Another hero of ours has gone. Described as 2the Man who shot the Seventies”, Mick Rock created some of the most iconic nad lasting images of David Bowie, Queen, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, “Rocky Horror Picture Show”, Lindsay Kemp, Blondie and so many others.

We are proud of having had the privilege of collaborating with him for several years and we remember his acute sense of humour and his kindness. Unfortunately, also due to the pandemic, our paths never crossed and we never met him in person. However we could count on his support and his appreciation of our work, particularly of the limited edition books we have ublished.

We wish to celebrate him with these images and with his wife Pati’s words, to whome we send out heartfelt condolences: “Those who had the pleasure of existing in his orbit, know that Mick was always so much more than ’The Man Who Shot The 70s.’ He was a photographic poet — a true force of nature who spent his days doing exactly what he loved, always in his own delightfully outrageous way.

The stars seemed to effortlessly align for Mick when he was behind the camera; feeding off of the unique charisma of his subjects electrified and energized him. His intent always intense. His focus always total. A man fascinated with image, he absorbed visual beings through his lens and immersed himself in their art, thus creating some of the most magnificent photographs rock music has ever seen. To know Mick was to love him. He was a mythical creature; the likes of which we shall never experience again.

Let us not mourn the loss, but instead celebrate the fabulous life and extraordinary career of Michael David Rock”.

ART KANE. VISIONARY. THE GREAT MUSEUM EXHIBITION IN NAPLES FROM 12 JUNE.

Some famous, others unpublished: one hundred photographs tell the visual imagination of the second half of the twentieth century. They are the iconic shots of  Art Kane, the American photographer who with his gaze has reinvented and redefined the canons of the portrait, fashion photos, advertising collected in the retrospective Art Kane. Visionary, curated by Jonathan Kane and Guido Harari, which will be inaugurated Wednesday 12 June 2019 in the Chiostro di Santa Caterina a Formiello in Naples.

The exhibition is made up of several sections. The one dedicated to music collects photos taken by Kane of the greatest rock icons of the sixties and jazz of the fifties. Another section, equally rich, deals in a visionary way, also thanks to innovative combinations and stratifications of images, social and political themes, going through some of the issues that have deeply marked American society and beyond, such as the struggle for civil rights of African-Americans and American Indians, religious fundamentalism, the Vietnam war, the nuclear nightmare of Hiroshima, the first steps of environmental awareness and a criticism of consumerism. Finally, a section is dedicated to the story of the changes in American society, through customs, fashion, advertising and eroticism.

In each shot, in each of the worlds told by Kane, the strength and originality of his gaze emerges, which earned him the most prestigious photographic awards and the covers of the major magazines in the world. Because, as he himself claimed “My aim is to show the invisible part of people.”

But Kane is universally known forHarlem 1958, the shot of 12 August 1958 in which he immortalized 57 jazz legends gathered in Harlem, on the sidewalk in front of number 17 on East 126th Street, creating the most significant image in the history of jazz. With this photo, Kane won the gold medal of the New York Art Directors Club. His power, in addition to generations of photographers who still draw inspiration from it in an infinite game of quotes, was the subject of Jean Bach’s documentary in 1994 A Great Day in Harlem, (nominated for an Oscar) and, more recently, Spielberg’s film, The Terminal with Tom Hanks. A few months ago the publication of the volume Art Kane. Harlem 1958 – The 60th Anniversary Edition, edited by Jonathan Kane and Guido Harari, edited by Wall Of Sound Editions.

ART KANE’S NEWLY RESTORED FILM

You may know that visionary photographer ART KANE conceived and directed a film in 1967 called “A Time To Play” that was featured at the USA pavilion at Expo ’67 in Montreal. It’s use of three screens was way ahead of its time. Each screen is incredibly composed. The editing is brilliant. And as usual for Art Kane, it’s a vision of a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic society that the world is still trying to catch up with.

With the exception of an old VHS tape, this amazing film has been pretty much MIA. Until now. Last week Jonathan Kane was contacted by some wonderful people at The National Archive in Washington DC and the University of Maryland, who have found and restored the original film. Amazing!

Have a look here. It’s a short film of 20 minutes, and worth every second.
